Photoshop CS5 is Adobe’s anchor program for photographers of all levels. I started using Photoshop about 10 years ago as a hobby on a PC and began intensively using it about 2 years ago in version CS2. I now use a MacBook Pro (using Snow Leopard OS) with 4GB SDRAM and a Nvida GeForce 8600M GT which handles the program (a memory intensive program) with good speed–although I intend to add more memory shortly to maximize the program-computer utility. This new upgrade is more sensitive to input on my MacPro than the predecessor version and much faster in execution whether keyboard, mouse, or stylus pen on my Wacom Intuos2 tablet (the newer version is Intuos4). As another reviewer stated, the most usable new feature of this version is the Content-Aware filter which removes unwanted artifacts or objects with precision and ease. This feature is available as fill, spot-healing, or scaling. Another feature which has caught my attention is the addition of a new set of “artists” brushes which make the program usable for painting specificity, if that is your need (I use in retouching photographs!). There are a few other new features but this version to me concentrates on making what was there “better!” The program comes with another attached program named Adobe Bridge (as do all of the programs in Adobe’s suites). Bridge is fabulous for file and photo-organization as well as initial adjustment of exposure and texture for your photos. I would recommend that if you are a beginner to take a subscription with [...] where you can learn with videos by Ben Long, Chris Orwig, Jan Kabili, Deke McCelland, and James Williamson, all experts in the photo-artistic-web fields. Best of luck.

If you’re familiar photo shop, CS5 is a little different from its predecessors. Mostly due to the ease of importing things like brushes through the program itself instead of having to manually install them. Many new features that are tucked away will surprise you. You may want to get a book to better equip yourself with this program.
If your new to Adobe CS, you really need to build your PC around the program, not the other way around. Use a Quadro FX / Intel based system and the program will run like gang busters. DO NOT use a gaming card. This program was specifically engineered to use the Quadro FX cards.
Windows 7 64-bit i5/760 based systems allow the program to open up its potential and multi-thread as intended. It takes about 3-4 seconds for it to start up on my current system. No lag, no stuttering, but then I did build a whole new system specifically for this program.
I bought a legit copy for photography usage. Yes its pricey but for what I will be using it for, I need legitimate (licensed) software.
Also, Intuos Pen Tablets work perfect with CS5. When building or buying a system, make no compromises. Buy the hardware that runs the programs you’re wanting to use.
My system specs:
EVGA P55 Classified 200 Mother Board (be warned, these use the good gold CPU sockets, cheaper boards do not)
15 760 CPU
Noctua NH-U12P SE2 120mm SSO CPU Cooler with Arctic Silver 5
8 gigs of G-skill Ripsaw memory (2x 4 gig sticks) Graphics card reserves 3.6 gigs, so go overkill with your memory.
PNY Quadro FX 1800 graphics card with 768 MB of memory (this is all you need for CS5) The newer graphic FX cards are designed to run Auto CAD and 3D Studio Max.
2x Western Digital 150 GB Raptor hard drives striped in RAID 0. (I have backup of course)
Corsair 800D Full Tower Case (Best case I have owned)
Corsair 1000 watt modular power supply (Max usage is 150 watts under load, this is great for the PS)
Intuos 4 Pen Tablet
Windows 7 64-bit
Now here is the meat. When the room temp is 78f, with CS5 running and when its working, rarely do any of the 4 cores go above 35c!! I tried CS 4 on a Pentium 940D running a Windows XP 32-bit and it did not work well. I was also using a Gforce 9800 GTX card which didn’t help much.
Make positively sure your system is designed for graphics when using this program.

I am new to Photoshop and it is a whole new learning curve for me, but this is a very powerful tool for photographers and I love all the features and am anxious to see all that it can do for me. Great support is in place and lots of information available for areas of the program that may not be clear to the user.

Adobe does graphics like no one else…CS5 has not only made Photoshop more useful than ever, but easier to use as well. Lucky me that I switched from a Mac to a PC and had to get a new copy!

Just the capability to use the “content-aware” fill is worth the upgrade. Photoshop has done it again.
