How To Use Photoshop Tools

Adobe Photoshop is today\’s market leader when it comes to photo editing software programs. Inside Photoshop are a variety of tools that help you create images such as logos, banners, and buttons from scratch as well as edit digital photographs. I want to start with the most familiar item first. At the top of the screen is the Menu Bar which looks like the menu bar in most other applications. Each menu item is almost self explanatory; for example, if you want to do anything with the \”file\” you are working on you will find it under \”File.\” If you want to manipulate anything on the screen you should find it under \”Edit\” or \”Tools.\” Under the menu items you will find all the tools in which to create or manipulate your items.

The Drawing Canvas is the next part of Photoshop that you want to become familiar with. The drawing canvas is the large white area in the middle of the screen where you can create or edit your images. Here you can also limit or specify the size of your image and you will want to set the size of your drawing canvas to match your projects requirements. The drawing canvas title bar will tell you the name of your image once you have saved it, as well as the magnification level at which you are viewing your screen and what workspace mode you are in. You can have an unlimited number of drawing canvases open at one time and to set them to all different sizes.

The Toolbox is your main arsenal of tools which will allow you to create and edit your images in Photoshop. The toolbox contains twenty different tools that allow you to draw and modify images on your drawing canvas. When you hold your mouse over each item and a \”tooltip\” will appear telling you the name of the tool itself. You might notice a small triangle at the bottom of the tool icon. If you can press and hold your mouse over the tool a flyout menu will appear showing any hidden tools. With these tools you can create shapes, draw lines, fill in colors, erase images, select parts of an image, and so much more. When you select the different tools Photoshop changes the shape of your mouse pointer with the idea that you will remember what tool you are currently using.

The last component of Photoshop that you will need to be familiar with is the dock which contain certain panels. When you open the program five panels will appear on your screen. These default panels are: information, brushes, layers, command, and color. More panels are found in the Windows menu on the menu bar. These panels are what give Photoshop its versatility. Each panel modifies the properties of the tools in the toolbox. For example, the brushes panel allows you to change the thickness of line your brush draws. Each panel contains its own features and it is a good idea to familiarize yourself with each panel and their functions. You will also want to look at the menu\’s for each of the panels which are availabe at the top right of the panel.

Once you are comfortable with the basic layout of Photoshop you should get to know all the tools in your toolbox. The best way to do this is open a new drawing canvas select each tool and begin to play and see what each one does. If you have the instruction manual in front of you you will be able to read about each of the tools properties and what exactly it does. Once you have become comfortable with the basics of the program you can begin to work on the more advanced features.

At first, I was too intimidated to contemplate tackling photoshop, but a friend urged me to try it. While I’m still dipping into the vast array of choices, it has already made recovery of old images dating back almost sixty years far more fun. I’m in midst of a project to import an inventory of over 30,000 slides as well as files of black and while film strips to a Mac with external memory. Many of them, of course, are faded. But ,they cover mountaineering from Mt Fuji to Everest and the Sierra Nevada plus other places as well as years of studies of European, American, Japanese, and Indian architecture. They also include world wide studies of landscapes and gardens. Photoshop techniques can bring needed new life to critical parts of this collection.

A powerful photo editing application for the non professional

Photoshop Elements 8 provides a vast and powerful array of editing features for amateur and prosumer photographers. 

While it does not have all the features that are available with Photoshop CS5, you do get most of the essential ones at a fraction of the cost. Anyone who may be interested in this software may also be looking into iPhoto or even Picasa 3 (the previous costing about as part of the iLife suite and the later being free from Google). I have both and both of them pales in comparison as far as editing capabilities are concerns. However, because there are so many editing features available in photoshop elements 8, you will undoubtedly need a good reference manual to help you learn the application as its learning curve can be quite steep. 

There are a few quibbles with the software, as good as it is for the price: The browser feature of the software is actually a separate application (Adobe Bridge). I find this app quite antiquated when compared to either iPhoto or Picasa. It is super easy to manage a large photo library with either one of these apps but not so with Adobe Bridge. In this aspect, Adobe has a lot of catching up to do. 

In conclusion, this is a worthy purchase, but not if you are an amateur or do not need any more editing features with your photos then what you will find in Photo Both from apple.

Nice Update

Version 8 is a nice upgrade to the Photoshop Elements group. If you are looking for a nice photo editor, take a close look at Elements 8. I have looked at several other Mac photo editors like Pixelmator and was disappointed. Photoshop Elements was what I was looking for. It is very similar to previous versions with some nice new special features such as Scene Cleaner and Photomerge Exposure which is a basic, easy to use HDR. If you already have version 6 the main new things are the special Photomerge options such as those just mentioned. The rest of the program changed little. Good if you know what you’re doing

I am not an artist and have very limited experience with Photoshop. My primary reason for getting this was to add notations to still images/screen shots. The ability to use layers makes it easy to add notations, which can then later be edited or deleted as needed. For what I wanted to do, this software works perfectly. 

However, I’m not really able to figure out how to do much of anything else. The program does not come with any printed documentation or tutorials that I could find. I tried to edit a photo I took of myself (see my profile) to remove the flash reflections from my sunglasses, but couldn’t find a way to get a good looking result without spending a lot of time editing the image pixel by pixel, with varying shades of black. Any other attempt to do a quick edit resulted in obvious black blobs over the sunglasses or a 2D looking result. 

To get the most out of this I think it would be good to have prior experience, take a class, or get a book that teaches the basics.
