So clearly, there is an oops between sales and deployment. I ordered the CS5 Extended upgrade for 349.00 (per all the drop downs). Hmmm, I thought, that's weird, since I own CS4 (not extended). Sure enough, when I tried to install it "not a qualifying product." Called Adobe Customer support which really does get a prize for the Unfriendly Tone of Voice. After going through her script (which was what she knew how to do in a frosty tone of voice), I got a code to "unlock" my install, which was, in fact, an okay install. Then I asked, "Will I have the same problem on my Desktop?" She wanted to stick to the script and give me the case number but I said, "oh, hey, let me just try it." Same problem, saved myself an extra call.

All is well because installed. But the communication is not exactly state-of-the-art. Adobe still hasn't pulled up its socks in this area. Wonder how many of these it handled today?

We go back to one of the first copies of Photoshop 2.0 to ship. We've seen some pretty cool features in Photoshop, over the years. This version is just packed with "WOW!" The most exciting for us has to be the new paint engine. We go back to Painter 1.0. Ps CS5 takes painting to a very new level, all in the familiar CS5 interface. When the healing and patch tools came on the scene, a few versions back, they redefined photo retouching. However, it's now been re-redefined with the content-aware features. Lens correction offers good reason to go back and revisit images. We've been doing 3D for eons but Repoussé makes our previous efforts seen less than worthy of what we can do now: extrude away to wherever your imagination goes. Another one for photographers to cheer about is in Refine Edge: big-haired models are now easier to tame. You'll feel like you're working at Industrial Light & Magic with Puppet Warp: repositioning someone's body parts, seems like something right out of Hollywood. The new Camera Raw is a must-have. And, the speed bump of 64-bit makes it worth the upgrade. MiniBridge is efficient and CS Review offers great cloud collaboration.

Photoshop has for a long time been the top-of-the-line photo editing program on both PCs and Macs. We had a student version on an old iMac back when my wife and I were students, but when I upgraded to a Macbook Pro I picked up Elements instead of full-blown Photoshop. It seemed to do everything I could imagine wanting to do with photos and more.

I never imagined you could do what you can with the latest version of Photoshop, though. If you've ever thought about upgrading to the full version of Photoshop, now would be the time, especially if you are a student and can get the student price, or if you can get the upgrade price. Some of the features on this new version are nothing short of astonishing.

First of all, it can do all the usual adjusting and layering and touch up and effects, and seems to do them better than ever. It appears to be quite stable, and very fast, possibly owing to the new 64-bit support on CS5. I've been working with Photoshop CS5 Extended every day for a few weeks (on a Macbook Pro, OS 10.6.3, 28GHz, 4GB Ram) and haven't had any problems or glitches. It installed without a hitch and runs nicely. No slow downs, no hangups, no crashing.

One thing I like is that when you open another program in Mac, the photoshop tools and utilities windows hide out of the way until you go back into it. Final Cut doesn't do that, for example, which means that if I'm working on Final Cut I need to move my windows out of the way to get at other things, or use Spaces and set my apps on different spaces windows in order to be productive.

There are three basic parts to the Photoshop package: an organizer (Adobe Bridge), a non-destructive photo adjuster (Adobe Raw, which is designed for RAW format photos but works on JPEGs as well), and an editor (Photoshop, which does ordinary adjustments and tweaks but also works with layers and masks and an inexhaustible array of effects to allow you to do pretty much anything you could possibly imagine with your photos).

What's new in CS5?

Mini Bridge - in addition to the ordinary Bridge program that helps organize your photos (and other files for use with other CS5 programs), Photoshop includes the Mini Bridge that functions like a bridge app that opens within photoshop itself. It only works, though, if Bridge is already open. Bridge also allows you to batch rename photos - which is very cool, especially with the funky way that cameras tend to name your photos.

Refine edge - Photoshop's selection tools are already pretty astonishing, and with the new refine edge tools (that work both for selections and for masks) they've gotten much more sophisticated, allowing you to fine tune selections in pretty amazing ways. For example with frizzy hair, where you can see through the hair at the edges to a background, refine edge can usually allow you to select just the hair and not the background. There's even a tool that allows you to get rid of reflections from the background on the subject. When I do green screen photography, it's always difficult to avoid getting some green light bounce on the perimeter of the subject. What's truly amazing is that with Photoshop's selection tools and refine edge, you really don't even need to use the green screen because you can replace the background of most photos without it.

New painting options - there are a whole range of new brushes you can paint with and each brush can be adjusted for thickness and stiffness, and several other properties that make photoshop into a true painting program, and allow you to use painting to either modify existing photos or create original artworks. The coolest painting feature is the "Mixer Brush" that allows you to treat a photograph as if it were covered in wet paint and to either paint from it as if it were a palette or to mix other colors with the existing colors on the photo.

3D & Puppet Warp - you can take a photo and make it into a 3-D postcard that can be rotated and re-oriented however you like. Additionally you can create three dimensional objects or make elements of photographs into 3-D objects so you can experiment with different ways of laying them out. Puppet Warp allows you to take an object and move its elements around - turning a head or raising an arm for example.

Improved HDR Pro Support - you can shoot photos with a range of exposures and it will bring them together in a single shot that captures all the nuance you want; you can then adjust these in case you want, say, to flatten the shadows or want less nuance in the highlights of a certain area in the photo. Note that this can even work if you don't have a tripod and just eyeball the frames, since the program will automatically detect the overlap regions. Pretty cool.

Photoshop CS5 and Lightroom 3: A Photographer's Handbook by Stephen Lakevitch is an excellent book!
Very well organized & easy to read.
This book generously shows how a similar procedure can be done in either Photoshop CS5, Camera Raw 6, or Lightroom 3,
and uses visual anchors/icons of the application being presented on the side of each page to remind you which application is being focused on.
Technical jargon is simplified so anyone at any level can understand, and keyboard shortcuts are introduced step-by-step
in a practical way as you learn more, and not as an intimidating list that you feel forced to memorize.
Stephen Lakevitch is an Adobe Certified Instructor, and has consulted with Adobe to prepare the Photoshop Certified Expert exams.
Stephen shows his expertise by taking you through his time tested workflow, and by sharing various photography tips such as creating panoramas and High Dynamic Range images.
Like getting 3 books in one without the superfluous explanations, this book will get you up to speed in no time creating great images!

If you are planing on purchasing only one book this year for guidance on CS5 & LR3, make this book your choice! Starting out with one of the BEST basic technical sections I've read in any book, and I have literally dozens of books on digital photography/editing, through to the integration of Lightroom with Photoshop, Steve leads the reader with the recognizable skill of a polished instructor. Moreover, the book's pages are icon (Ps, acr, Br, and Lr) tabbed allowing for rapid location of information pertaining to the area of immediate interest. The information is easy to understand, flows smoothly, and is fully complemented with hundreds of illustrations and screen shots with full explanations of how, when, and why you would employ the features being discussed. Unlike many tomes currently in vogue, this is not a cookbook designed to show you how you would get a specific photo to look a certain way, but rather a guide that will provide you with the knowledge needed to work on any image to improve it. In the process, Steve fully describes his workflow approach to creating the final output with a minimum of effort. Without a doubt, this is one of the very best books ever published for working with digital images.

This book takes a different approach than other "Photoshop" books in that it addresses, fairly completely, all four Adobe products typically used by digital photographers: Photoshop CS5, Lightroom 3, camera raw and Bridge. It does this in a fully integrated progression from system configuration through work flow and printing. When more than one of these programs might be useful for a given task, all are covered so if you have both CS5 and lightroom, it will discuss how each could be used. Each page is clearly marked with the appropriate logo so you'll see which of these programs the page addresses. I don't use them all so it was easy to skip the pages that didn't apply.

It is designed as a standalone book that covers everything you need to know to get started w/ these programs. Given the breath of the coverage, it doesn't get too in-depth so it's best for beginner to intermediate users. While it covers the major new features of CS5, it doesn't cover them all - just the ones that could be part of a typical work flow. So less useful features, like "puppet warp", are skipped. It's not a "what's new in CS5" type book - it addresses the complete work flow and addresses the most used features, both old and new.

Overall, this is a very good review of these adobe products. If you have them all, it's one-stop-shopping. But even if you only use a few, you will find it easy to use and helpful.

Ordered from Bluestarisales (no longer listed as of this writing) and so far all is well. Installation, registration and updates all functioned as expected. If any issues arrise, I'll be back to report. This Extended version was listed and sold under the CS4 products "these sellers".

This is a "feature rich" version of CS4 and is very powerful for photographers. The "Stacks" feature is able to remove moving people and high ISO generated noise from multiple exposures... hand held, as well as processing bracketed DOF images to provide one with the optimum DOF in one image. This feature was available previously as software for astrophotography which I intend to put to the test.

Update October '09: After using the program for a few weeks it still performs well...however and it may be a big "however". Checking in on blogs on the net resulted in finding that some of this software contains virus's and other bad stuff. What appears to be happening is my hard drive is very busy on a longer than normal boot and is as discribed on one blog. Several items were discovered on a deep scan with my anti virus program and isolated. I'll be watching to see if this reoccurs.

Update June 16, 2010:
This worked on my HP Vista machine however after installing Windows 7 it no longer will install.
