I have used CS2, CS3 and now recently upgraded to CS5. There were a few changes and improvements, and I wanted some help. I ordered this book because it was the first available, but I am not disappointed in the least. I think a novice or intermediate will be happy with the walkthrough style lessons, clear and easy to understand. The new features in CS5 are well covered, as well as all the basics. Included is a DVD with all lesson files.
I have used Kelby, Deke, and Eisenman in past, I rate this as good…..

When I was shopping for a book, I chose this one because a) it looked beginner friendly and b) I liked the idea of a video tutorial and c) it was being released far earlier than the Scott Kelby book I was interested in. I had two questions that seemed unanswered by the description: 1) How long are the tutorials? and 2) How Mac friendly are the instructions? Well, I’m here to answer those questions for others who asked them. First, let me say that it does seem pretty beginner friendly (I’m relieved that it seems to be able to answer my most basic questions). The 14 tutorials are each approximately five minutes long; so that’s a little over an hour on one disc (which you can store to your hard drive if you like). She lists the PC instructions first and immediately follows them with any Mac modifications. She seems determined to balance the two systems. Oddly, the illustrations seem to fluctuate from PC to Mac screen captures (there seem to be a few more Mac captures toward the back). **Note: I am writing this review after playing with the book for about 1 hour, so consider other more detailed reviews in your choice; I gave it five stars because it looks very promising and I was content with the length of the tutorials and Mac instructions. However, someone else can probably provide more info about the content than I.**

I have never used photoshop and this has definitely helped me learned its features quickly so far.
The first 1 star rating complained about pictures not matching what where they are suppose to be and not being being able to do some of the lessons. I don’t have a Mac so I not sure if it is an issue with Macs, but everything has worked perfectly for me through the first 3 lessons I have done.
Looking forward to get on with the other lessons!

The very first lesson jump starts you into the world of photoshop. Never having had any experience with photoshop before, I learned very quickly how to create, enhance and completely change images. The DVD is a lifesaver. In roughly five minutes, the instructor teaches the concepts in the chapter that usually take an hour to absorb by reading. I would recommend this book to anyone new to photoshop.

The CS4 version of this book has been an invaluable tool for me to use in my classroom. So, of course I wanted to investigate the CS5 version. So far it looks great. The lessons have been updated to include new features, which help me get up to speed quickly. The videos are a huge asset, as they correspond with the content of the lessons. Of course there a better books out there for advanced users, but if you want clearly defined concepts with examples, and incredible tips to boot, this is the book to buy.
